A Message from Pastor Hollie Miller and the Transition Committee

To our Brothers and Sisters in Christ at Sevier Heights:

Through the years, God has used Sevier Heights in special ways through the leadership of faithful Pastors. God has used the last 31 years of leadership to uniquely position Sevier Heights to have an opportunity to reach Knoxville and the surrounding communities for Christ. As God has been faithful in the past, we are convinced He will continue to be faithful in the future.

In our effort to be completely transparent with the church, we are enclosing the following timeline which describes what has occurred up to this point.

Fall 2017
In the fall of 2017, I notified the Personnel Committee of my intention to step down as Senior Pastor in early 2019. In the following months, the Personnel Committee regularly met, discussed, and prayed with me regarding the transition. During those meetings, we agreed Tim Miller should be a candidate for the next Senior Pastor. They took into consideration his passion for teaching God’s Word, tenure at Sevier Heights (20+ years), seminary education, love for this church and the obvious favor God has shown on His ministry as College Pastor and North Campus Pastor.
July 11, 2018
At a meeting on Wednesday, July 11, the Personnel Committee voted unanimously to ask the deacons to prayerfully consider requesting the Transition Committee, when it is formed, to consider Tim Miller first before they consider other candidates.
July/August 2018
During July and August of 2018, I, in partnership with the Pastor’s Council, began praying for God’s leadership concerning the formation of the Transition Committee. I selected both men and women of various ages who are regular attendees at Main and North Campus. These men and women are faithful in attendance. They each participate in a Group. They are consistent givers and they serve in other ministries.
September 10, 2018
On Monday, September 10, I shared with our deacon body my intention to step down as Senior Pastor. During that meeting, Alan Galloway, an active deacon and Chairman of the Personnel Committee, motioned for the deacons to make the following request to the Transition Committee as soon as that committee is approved by the church: That the Transition Committee would consider Tim first as a candidate for the position of Senior Pastor before they considered other candidates. The deacons were given 20 days to pray, ask questions, and return for discussion and vote on September 30.
September 23, 2018
On Sunday, September 23, I announced to the church body my intentions to step down as Senior Pastor of Sevier Heights.
September 2018
The Proposed Transition Committee met three times (September 11, 17, and 25) to pray over the transition process and to begin developing a timeline in the event the Committee was approved by the church. No Candidates were interviewed during this time.
September 30, 2018
Prior to the evening service on September 30, the deacon body gathered to vote on the Personnel Committee proposal and unanimously approved the motion to publicly request the Transition Committee to consider Tim Miller first as a candidate for the position of Senior Pastor before they consider other candidates.

On September 30, a church vote approved the Transition Committee. In light of the deacon vote earlier that afternoon, Deacon Chairman Mike Bolton stood before the church and made the request to the Transition Committee that Tim Miller be considered before any other candidates.

October 1, 2018
On October 1, the Transition Committee met with Tim Miller to begin a time of questioning which focused on theology, philosophy, personal life, and his vision for Sevier Heights.
October 2, 2018
On October 2, the Transition Committee met with Tim and Jenny Miller at their home for further questioning and a time of prayer.
October 3, 2018
On October 3, the deacon body met with Tim and Jenny Miller to also ask questions concerning theology, philosophy, personal life and his vision for Sevier Heights.
October 4, 2018
On October 4, the Transition Committee met to discuss the meetings of October 1, 2 and 3.
October 7-13, 2018
During the week of October 7-13, there will be no meetings with the Transition Committee. Meetings will resume October 14.
October 14, 2018
On October 14, Tim Miller met with the Transition Committee and Group leaders to answer frequently asked questions.

The Committee will schedule meetings with Staff, Group Leaders and Worship Ministry. Additionally, on October 23, there will be an open forum to provide opportunities to learn more about Tim and his heart for Sevier Heights. To submit your questions for Tim to answer in this October 23 meeting, email them to transition@sevierheights.org. We will continue updating the church throughout this process.

Transition Committee and I are humbled the church put their trust in us to lead in the search of the next Senior Pastor of Sevier Heights. We take this responsibility very seriously and we covet your prayers. Our only desire is to attempt to find the man God has chosen to serve Sevier Heights and to recommend him to the church.

For the glory of God,

Bro. Hollie Miller

September 23, 2018

Our senior pastor, Hollie Miller, announced he will step down from his ministry at Sevier Heights. This decision is the result of many months of seeking God through prayer and fasting. He and Paula believe this will allow the future church leadership to guide Sevier Heights into her greatest days.

For over 30 years, Pastor Miller and his wife, Paula, have loved and led us well. We’re partnering with them in praying for the next ministry assignment God has for them, as well as for the future of Sevier Heights.

Their last Sunday will be February 3. On September 30, Pastor Miller will share the names of the people he has asked to serve on a Transition Committee to help lead us through this next season. We will vote on this committee during our 6:00 p.m. service on September 30 at our Main Campus.
